Critical Minerals Refining and Recycling
We are scaling electrification and storage, but the mineral supply chain is concentrated, slow, and not circular enough.
The Stakes
This is the materials substrate for the energy transition and the digital economy. A constrained minerals supply chain can bottleneck grids, batteries, and defense production. Recycling and refining also reduce environmental harm per unit of capacity delivered.
Headline evidence
- •IEA reports lithium demand rose by nearly 30% in 2024, with broad growth across key minerals driven by electric vehicles, storage, renewables, and grids. [1]
- •IEA outlines continued supply concentration risks, with diversification uneven across minerals and time horizons. [2]
- •The IEA frames minerals as a core energy transition dependency, requiring active policy and investment to avoid shortages and volatility. [3]
Neglectedness
Why it stays neglected
Refining is capex-heavy, regulated, and often opposed locally. Recycling suffers from fragmented collection, unclear ownership of end-of-life streams, and difficult chemistry. Buyers want cheap inputs now, not resilient supply later. Standards for battery passports and material traceability are evolving but incomplete.
Tractability
Medium. Better hydrometallurgy, direct recycling, and process control are emerging. AI helps optimize process parameters and detect impurities. The hard pieces are siting, permitting, and integration into OEM supply contracts with bankable offtake.
Startup surfaces
- •High-yield, low-waste refining processes for specific chemistries (lithium, nickel, rare earths)
- •Battery and electronics recycling with verified material provenance and quality grading
- •Collection logistics and reverse supply chain platforms for end-of-life batteries
- •“Materials passport” systems linking composition to recycling pathways and compliance
- •Predictive supply chain analytics for OEMs tied to contracts and hedging
