EV Charging Reliability and Interop

Electric vehicles are scaling, but charging still fails too often and too opaquely, slowing adoption and eroding confidence.

The Gap

What exists is a fragmented network of chargers with inconsistent uptime, payment UX, and maintenance. What could exist is charging as dependable infrastructure: standardized interoperability, real-time reliability telemetry, and enforceable service agreements that make charging as boring as gas, but cleaner.

The Stakes

EV adoption is a trust curve. Reliability failures are high-salience deterrents (“range anxiety”). If charging becomes dependable and transparent, we accelerate electrification, reduce oil dependence, and unleash transportation abundance.

Headline evidence

  • •The U.S. NEVI standards (Feb 2023) require each funded charger to have ≥97% average annual uptime, making reliability a binding requirement【14†L68-L76】【14†L153-L161】.
  • •The NEVI rule also mandates standardized price display and payment requirements for chargers, enforcing transparency for drivers【14†L68-L76】.
  • •NEVI’s reliability mandate has shifted uptime from a recommendation to a mandate, signaling that operational excellence is now measurable and enforced【14†L153-L161】.

Neglectedness

InevitableNeglected

Why it stays neglected

Charging networks are fragmented, low-margin ops with harsh environments. Incentives reward rapid deployment over lifetime uptime. Data is siloed across operators and OEMs. Accountability is weak without standardized telemetry and enforceable SLAs.

Tractability

Highly tractable. Remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and standard protocols exist. The hard part is operational discipline: diagnosing faults, dispatching repairs quickly, and proving uptime credibly to regulators. AI can predict failures and optimize maintenance scheduling.

Startup surfaces

  • •Charger reliability telemetry and uptime auditing aligned to NEVI metrics
  • •Predictive maintenance services targeting common failure modes
  • •Unified payment and pricing transparency layers across networks
  • •Contracting platforms for enforceable O&M service-level agreements
  • •Fleet/route planning tools that avoid low-confidence chargers and reduce exposure to failures
