Sustainable Aviation Fuel Scale-Up

We know aviation needs low-carbon fuels, but sustainable aviation fuel supply, certification, and offtake structures are still too small and too slow to matter at climate scale.

The Gap

What exists is a tiny sustainable aviation fuel market with high costs, limited feedstocks, and complex certification. What could exist is a scaled fuel ecosystem: bankable offtakes, standardized lifecycle accounting, and production pathways that expand supply without breaking land, food, or biodiversity constraints.

The Stakes

Aviation is hard to electrify at long range, so fuels matter. If sustainable fuel does not scale, aviation remains a durable emissions source and a political constraint on climate goals. Scaling sustainable aviation fuel also builds broader clean fuel infrastructure that can spill into shipping and industry.

Headline evidence

  • •IEA notes aviation is a difficult-to-abate sector and tracks sustainable aviation fuel as a key lever for reducing emissions. [1]
  • •ICAO has established the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, increasing demand for credible lifecycle accounting and fuel substitution. [2]
  • •IEA tracking indicates sustainable aviation fuel remains a small fraction of total jet fuel supply, highlighting an adoption and scale bottleneck. [1]

Neglectedness

InevitableNeglected

Why it stays neglected

Feedstock constraints, high capex, and uncertain long-term policy make financing hard. Airlines have thin margins and cannot pay large green premiums indefinitely. Lifecycle accounting is complex and contested. The supply chain spans agriculture, chemical processing, and refinery infrastructure, which moves slowly.

Tractability

Tractable if we build the contracting and measurement layer: bankable offtakes, credible lifecycle MRV, and standardized certification. What remains hard is scaling production sustainably without land-use backlash. AI helps optimize feedstock logistics, process control, and lifecycle traceability.

Startup surfaces

  • •Lifecycle emissions MRV tooling and audit-ready fuel accounting systems
  • •Offtake contracting platforms that aggregate airline demand into financeable volumes
  • •Feedstock logistics optimization with traceability and sustainability constraints
  • •Process optimization for fuel conversion pathways and refinery integration
  • •Certification workflow automation for fuel producers and airlines
